Hunt For The Crib
Monday, October 03, 2005
Now that we've hit the 20-week mark, it's time to start collecting baby stuff. I'm feeling pretty good (finally) and have heard that the third trimester is just as bad as or worse than the first. So, I'd like to start shopping before I have to waddle around, frantic for the bathroom, while trying to decide on nursery decor and baby gear.
We generally like the Scandinavian furniture, but living in the south, it's hard to come by. IKEA just opened a new store in town, so we stopped by to check out the cribs. If you've ever been to IKEA, you know that you don't just stop by, it's a major hike that involves following a path through the entire store (the size of two super-Wal-Mart’s).
Two bathroom stops and some really bad macaroni and cheese from the in-store cafeteria later, we arrived at the children’s section. As expected, IKEA has a lot of innovative stuff, but their cribs had some major faults.Problems with IKEA cribs:
a. You couldn't raise and lower the bottom to adjust as the baby grows.
b. You couldn't lower one side of the crib rails to reach the baby with ease.
c. They were just plain cheap and ugly.
Perhaps I'm too picky. After all, the cribs were only 59 bucks or so.
So, the search continues. Next we'll try Target. We should be able to find a reasonable price on a crib with standard features. I don't need the posh nursery that so many parents splurge for, but I do need something nice and preferably white.
