Mommies Don't Get Sick Days
Wednesday, August 23, 2006
Even though Lilly is six months old, I'm still adjusting to motherhood. I love spending my days with her but sometimes I miss my old life - especially my old life before IBD and thyroid issues.
I'm especially missing my old life this week. Hubby is out of town on a business trip and Lilly and I are at home, both sick with monster colds (or some bug). I can hardly function and yet I have to take care of a very demanding baby, who doesn't feel good herself. Gone are the days when I could take a "sick day" to sleep in and then sit in front of the TV with my box of Kleenex, remote control, and bowls of jello.
Mommies don't get "sick days". I'm discovering that Mommies don't get a lot of things. I never realized what my mom had to go through to raise me. I have a whole new appreciation for her and I'm so grateful to have her nearby to reassure me that everything I feel is normal and that she also felt the same way.
Maybe part of what's making this adjustment difficult is dealing with IBD and thyroid issues. Speaking of which, I am feeling better lately. I'm taking 19 prescription pills (5 prescriptions) daily and thankfully something is finally starting to help the IBD. I don't know which one is helping. Not that I care - after suffering (and I mean SUFFERING) for almost five months, I'm just glad to feel better - except this darn supper bug that I have right now.

Oh i know just what you mean, i sure wish there were times we could have a tiny break, but such is life.
Glad that something you are taking is starting to work, I wonder if it's something for your thyroid. I'd love to know what it is that you're on since I'm still battling this torture out.(that's if you want to tell) But I know in my case my thyroid is fine, so that wouldn't help me.
Take care, hopefully Lilly and you will be feeling better soon :) - At 11:25 AM, Avorie said...

I'm taking the following:
Asacol 4 pills of 400 mg three times a day.
Cipro 2 times a day.
Metronidazole (I think, I'm too lazy to get up and check right now) 4 times a day.
Senthroid - 100mcg once day.
I don't think the Senthroid has anything to do with it. The doctor said that my tests showed scar tissue so it's been a chronic condition and there is no way it is related to the thyroid.
When I first started the Asacol again (thought I was allergic last time), everything got dramatically worse for a week. I called the doc and they told me to up my dosage (go figure, right).
Around that same time, I started the antibiotics and now I'm not bleeding much and hardly run to the bathroom (comparatively). I don't know if the Asacol finally kicked in or if it is a result of the antibiotics. Either way, I haven't felt this normal in almost 5 months.
The strange thing is that the doctor thought problem was so bad that it was very unlikely any of this would help. I'm taking Cipro for another week or maybe less and the Metronidazole for another three or so weeks.
I'm also sticking to my restricted diet. I positively cannot eat wheat, corn, or potatos or I really suffer for days. - At 12:05 PM, Kristin said...

I'm so happy to hear that you're feeling better. It sounded like a rough road for you.
I can relate on missing the "old life" with breaks. Now that I'm getting some breaks, it's making a world of difference. - At 6:14 PM, the boyd girls.... said...

Glad those meds are working. I'm taking Salofalk now. It's similar to asacol, all 5-ASA's. I bet the antibiotics and diet are the ones that are really helping this time. It sure is rough. I'm so scared to try that darn Imuran. Blah, but I'm still on that prednisone 25mg now, yuck. I tried coming off of it about 2 wks ago and I was a MESS. So on it again. Here's hoping they find a cure for this rotten disease.

Emmakirst - I took 10mg of Prednisone a few months ago, to get rid of my alergic reaction to canasa or asacol. It made me so squirly. I never want to take it again!
I hope they find a cure too!
Oh, I think I figgured out what caused this flair-up. I read online, that ibprofein can trigger flare-ups. Of course, I didn't know I had IBD until recently so they gave me ibprofein after Lilly's birth, then I kept taking it periodically for these strange headaches I got ever other day. Then I had a root canal and guess what they gave me? Yep, ibprofein. Then, a week after the root canal (which also happened to be a week after I cut dairy out of my diet to accomodate Lilly's allergy), I started having problems. So, maybe that triggered it. - At 4:20 AM, Emmakirst said...

Interesting, I used to take ibuprofen alot too, I think I'll stick with tylenol. There are so many things to watch for, it's enough to drive you silly.
