Prenatal Yoga

I bought a prenatal yoga DVD during the first trimester. I tried it once and was so frustrated that never watched it again. My hubby has been encouraging me to go to a yoga class, which I've been putting off. However, now that it's cold, and therefore closer to February, I'm getting scared. I decided to go to the classes offered by the hospital. The first class was last night. I have never really taken a yoga class before but I was absolutely shocked to see one of the pregnant women lying down and doing the splits!! Granted, she is not that far along in the pregnancy (14 weeks) and it's her third child, but I can barely touch my toes!
As the class progressed, I found out that most of the other women planed to have their babies either at home or at birthing centers. Wow. How brave of them. I am actually a little jealous that they are so in tune with their bodies that they think the can forgo the pain relief. I briefly looked into a birthing center and the whole water birth thing. However, when I found out that you can't have an epidural if you’re in water, I choose the epidural and therefore the hospital. This is my first baby and I'm very scared about the whole labor and delivery process. What if the cord is wrapped around the neck? What if I can't handle the pain? What if the baby is too big to fit though me and I have to have a C-Section?
After the class, I asked the flexible woman if she found that flexibility was really beneficial for labor. I thought that because she's already had two children and seems to be extremely flexible, it must be what she's striving for. I was wrong. According to this woman and the instructor, flexibility has nothing to do with it. The real trick is being able to breathe through the difficult poses and force your muscles to relax. That totally makes since, so I'll keep going to the classes. The teacher will be out for the next few weeks and in her place, we'll have a hypnobirthing instructor. It should be interesting!
My Hubby already told me he would stay as far away from hypnobirthing types as possible (his dad is a doctor), but I think they will have something interesting to teach. I'm sure I'll be grateful for any and all relaxation techniques when the time comes.

Good for you for being so proactive in getting your body ready for labor! I am sure it will all pay off in the end.
I think there are so many options out there for delivery. But I'm with you...give me the hospital and the doctor. At least for this first one. After that-we'll see.
