Welcome to my life. As a newish stay-at-home mom, I'm trying to figure out what my life is about. I know I'm a wife and mother, but who am I? This blog is my forum to find out and my therapy...

Official Bed Rest - Updated

We had our weekly fetal monitoring session this afternoon. The monitor showed that my uterus is quite irritable (I guess that's what they call small contractions). I had a few decent contractions so the doctor said she would check me and if I was dilated, she would send us right over to Labor and Delivery to get drugs to stop the contractions. As it turned out, I wasn't dilated at all and I'm still 25% effaced. The doctor did a fetal fibronectin test to determine the likelihood of going into labor in the next two weeks. If the test is positive, I have a 50% chance of having the baby in the next two weeks. If it's negative, then there is a 95% chance that baby won't arrive in the next two weeks. We should get the results tomorrow. I secretly hope that they are positive. I'm ready to have this baby NOW! Well, maybe I can hold on for two weeks...

Here's the nursery:

UPDATE:

The Fetal Fibronectin test came back negative. I know I've been complaining a lot lately, but I'm really glad that baby has a 95% chance not being born before 36 weeks. I can suffer a bit longer (today's a better day). I didn't get a chance to ask the doctor if bed rest was really necessary now that we know the test result was negative. I guess she knows what she's doing and it's better to be safe than sorry.

I LOVE your baby's room! So bright and colourful - good job!

So you are on bedrest or you will be once the tests come back positive? Don't you just love the 50% chance, I mean it certainly leaves a lot of room for error. I still haven't figured out how those tests really work.

Anyways, good luck, keep us posted and all that.

Cheers,
Reesh

Reesh - Thanks for the complements. To answer your question, the doctor put me on bedrest now, but if the test comes back negative, I'm going to ask her if bedrest is really necessary. I mean what's the point if there is a 95% chance I won't have the baby in the next two weeks?

Did you have the same test?

Welcome to the club!

No we didn't have the tests I was just immediately put on bedrest due to my very strong signs of labour. Call me skeptical, but given the odds, I thought we could probably figure it out ourselves and I didn't want to be waiting to go into labour within 10 days of the test and then not go into labour. I totally see why you would want to know though, since I've sort of stopped being pregnant and am now just trying not to give birth before 37 weeks. It's a completely different mindset to live within.

Anyways, good luck, I'm here if you need to chat...

Reesh - Yeah, I consider these contraction very minor. The doctor wanted to know if I had more than 5 or 6 in a hour so I've been keeping a log for the last four hours. I have about 10 each hour, but they are so minor that it doesn't seem like a big deal at all. They don't hurt, I'm not dialated and am not anymore effaced than I was last week.

When I read your blog, it totally seems like you have very good indicators of labor. I don't really, so it doesn't seem like I need to be put on bedrest. But, I guess it's better to be safe than sorry and I'll just talk with the doctor tomorrow when we get the test results back.

First of all, I love how the room turned out. The sun is so bright in there. Your little girl is going to just love it and be so happy there.

I don't even know what to say about the bedrest issues. Good luck with that. You guys will be in my thoughts.

Your nursery is awesome! I love IKEA! They have such great stuff for kids!
I'm glad your test came back negative, and you're probably right to just trust the doctor. When I think about how uncomfortable I am with all my swelling and the serious carpal tunnel in my hands and arms, I sometimes wish that my baby would arrive so that I can be comfortable in my body again...but then what's another few weeks of being uncomfortable compared to your baby's health? Hang in there, you're doing great!
