Welcome to my life. As a newish stay-at-home mom, I'm trying to figure out what my life is about. I know I'm a wife and mother, but who am I? This blog is my forum to find out and my therapy...

HypnoBirthing Update

I seem to have confused people with the HypnoBirthing and Childbirth class updates. Just to clarify, we're doing both. Since we're having the baby in the hospital, we're taking their classes. I'm also taking the HypnoBirthing class so I can learn to relax during labor and have an easier experience.

I've now been to three HypnoBirthing classes. I really liked the first class, but the rest haven't been as good. I'm having a difficult time feeling the things that she says I should be feeling during hypnosis (numb hand, etc). So, I told her that I didn't think it was working for me. What is working for me, are the birth affirmations. I received a relaxation CD with the HypnoBirthing book and one of the tracks has birth affirmations such as:

"You see your baby coming easily"
"You turn your birthing over to your body and your baby"

They sound corny, but they actually relax me and make me feel like I can really do this and it will be a good experience. I also bought the HypBirth program online and I like it much better than the classes! I get annoyed with the prolonged "get into hypnosis" parts and usually skip ahead to the good stuff (otherwise I fall asleep), which is a couple of minutes of relaxation; followed by more birth affirmations (I'm not sure what else to call them). So far, I'm still listening to the first CD each night. This week I'll start the second CD.

I borrowed a video of Dateline NBC's 20 minute program on HypnoBirthing and watched it last night. It was rather interesting because it followed two couples through their pregnancy and delivery. One couple had a HORRIBLE experience with their first child and the other couple was very nervous about having their first baby. The first-time mother did amazingly well during the entire labor. She was calm and looked like she was asleep the whole time. The other woman didn't have quite as easy of a time, but it was still drastically better than the first experience because she could relax through most of the labor.

I took the Hypnobirthing class when I was pregnant with baby #2. I can't get an epidural because of some spinal issues, so I knew I was going to need some help getting through labor.

I can't say I did my birthing the Hypnobirthing way, but I did use a lot of the relaxation techniques we had learned, and they helped tremendously. I just had baby #3 in November, and I used the relaxation stuff that had worked for me again. It was a really great experience (well, except for those last 10 minutes or so -- pushing HURTS). I think you'll most likely be very happy you took the course. Labor is painful and scary, especially that first time. You are going to be prepared and have some great tools at your disposal.
