Welcome to my life. As a newish stay-at-home mom, I'm trying to figure out what my life is about. I know I'm a wife and mother, but who am I? This blog is my forum to find out and my therapy...

Aspergers Autism

Something has been bothering a good friend of mine for the past few months. She hasn't wanted to talk about it so I haven't push her. I figured that she would tell me if she wanted me to know.

I was telling her about Baby's kidney problem and she finally told me what was bothering her. She took her two year-old son to the doctor because his toddler school teachers told her he was developmentally behind and was having problems communicating. She thought the doctor would just tell her that he needed speech therapy or something. But, to her shock, her son was diagnosed with Aspergers Syndrome, a form of Autism.

They put him into a special program and in just three weeks, he's communicating much better. My friend was so upset at first and was asking God why this had to happen. But now she has come to the realization that her baby is still perfect. He just needs her help to get along in the world.

If I had to take any special needs child and find the very best mother for him, it would be this friend of mine. She is an amazing person and I know her son will do better than most simply because she is his mother.

Regardless, my friend's baby has one of the rare forms of Autism that is genetic.
I was talking to my mother about the whole situation. She thinks that Autism is caused by the MMR vaccine. I'm torn. I've read a few books and I can't decide if there is something to the theory or if they are written by uninformed fanaticals. At least we're having a girl, which means that we have less of a risk of her developing Autism. I'm still not sure where I stand on vaccines. I'll probably delay them a bit, but we'll more than likely vaccinate our baby. Although I think I'll skip the Hepatitis B vaccine at birth. That sounds totally unnecessary.
