To Certify or Not to Certify...

I don't have a college degree. I spent many years working (as a highly skilled and paid consultant) and attended classes in the evenings. That is, until I met my husband. Now we have a baby and well, maybe I'll finish my degree someday. It's not that I need it to get a good job - I just want it for me.
Through all my years of working and going to school, I often thought about buying a "fake" degree from one of these diploma mills. But, I thought that it might come back to haunt me when I run for President some day (yeah right, huh?).
Tonight, I was reading Dilbert's The Joy of Work to Hubby while he assembled my new IKEA file cabinets for my office. Dilbert is so inspiring! I absolutely love it. But then I've worked in some HORRIBLE offices and can identify with most of the content.Oh! I just discovered Scott Adams, the author, has a blog! Hahhaha!! It's hilarious. Especially his post about Sadam's execution. Anyway, I was reading Scott Adam's bio and found that he's a certified hypnotist. How bizarre. It got me thinking. I need a new project. Wouldn't it be fun (in a weird way) to be certified in all sorts of strange things? I could be a certified handwriting expert, dream analyst, radiologist, or anything really. Not that I would actually do anything with them. It would just be cool to say that I was.
I blurted out my bright idea to Hubby, who reminded me that anyone will be able to google me and I might not want everyone to know I was once certified in various weird things. He's probably right. We're working on a business together and I wouldn't want bogus certifications to discredit my professional reputation.

I have a degree in German and Russian and although I do feel a certain amount of pride when I get to say this - I feel like a fraud. I hated uni and I am not fluent in either of these languages... for me my degree just shows I know how languages work and know how to work hard in an academic way.
Sometimes it's a blessing like that - meaning if I decide to, I can train to be a teacher in just a year whilst working and being paid (rather than 3 years unpaid studying) but sometimes it separates me from others - where I work now I am the only one who did higher education and when I was applying for jobs a lot of places turned me down because I was "overqualified".
I think if you want it for you - like you said - then that's great and that includes the random certificates you might pick up ;o) I have certificates in reiki and EFT - I never use them but for me they are a big thing!
