Welcome to my life. As a newish stay-at-home mom, I'm trying to figure out what my life is about. I know I'm a wife and mother, but who am I? This blog is my forum to find out and my therapy...

22 Week Sonogram With Perinatologist

Here are the 22 week ultrasound pictures we got from the Perinatologist today. The doctor said the baby has mild Hydronephrosis (Renal Pelvic Dilation), which is caused by Ureteropelvic Junction (UPJ) Obstruction. That basically means that the tubes that connect the kidney's to the bladder are a bit small and the kidneys aren't draining as quickly as they should, causing the fluid to backup. Right now, there is nothing we can or should do to help the problem. Intervention would cause more harm than good and the doctor seemed very positive about the situation. She said that the baby will probably be fine. She'll just be susceptible to kidney infections and will be followed by a pediatric urologist until she is 18. If it becomes chronic, she can have surgery to alleviate the problem. Overall, this is great news!

We asked the doctor if the Renal Pelvic Dilation could be a sign that we lost the 50/50 gamble with BOR Syndrome. The doctor said that given my genetic history, it is more likely that these problems are related to BOR Syndrome rather than just a coincidence.

My thoughts on this whole thing? It doesn't matter. Of all the things that can go wrong, this is so minor. So she might have a hearing loss and few issues that can be corrected with surgery. Big deal. Everyone has some sort of problem, and this is fairly minor. As long as she has a good mind, anything else can be dealt with. We were dealt a good hand of cards and we're extremely lucky to have her!!

We'll go back to the perinatologist in three weeks, at which time she'll refer us to the pediatric urologist for further evaluation.
