Day Laborers

My mom just moved in with us (until she finishes probate and can find a home near us). Her U-Haul arrived on Monday so yesterday we moved everything into storage. Originally we were going to hire movers, but they wanted over 300 dollars to unload a 14 foot U-Haul directly into a storage facility! Hubby came up with the brilliant idea of picking up some day laborers and paying them whatever the going rate is and a nice tip, which would be WAY cheaper than the movers. Before we left, Hubby called a friend who owns a general contracting business for some advice and to find out how much to pay. Then hubby went to get the guys. Before the guys got in the car they negotiated a price, but when they got to the storage location, they told Hubby that they wanted 6 times the price! Hubby was mad because they already worked out the price before they got in the car, but we figured that it was still cheaper than the moving company, so it we bargained with them again until we were all decently happy.
They did a good job, but the sure scared me! First, let me explain, these weren't the illegal immigrant day laborers. They were English speaking people who just couldn't find jobs else where - I guess. Anyhow, it took Hubby an hour to drop them off and I started getting really worried that they were unhappy with the price and decided to off Hubby! But he was okay. One of the guys was telling him that when he doesn't like the price, he just drops the TV and smashes it. The same dude was explaining how he was in prison in Chicago for 10 years on trumped up charges! Yikes!!!
I told Hubby that next time we should just go down to a different part of town and pick up illegals because they are not scary like that!
